7 Steps Of Repentance: Reconcile With God With This Easy-to-Follow Guide - Ever Growing Christians (2024)

As far as the Christian faith is concern, repentance is fundamental. It’s the process of turning away from our sins and returning to God with a contrite heart, seeking His forgiveness and renewal. The Bible offers guidance on how we can repent and reconcile with our Creator. In this blog post, I’ll wall you through the 7 steps of repentance with how you can apply them to your life to experience healing, forgiveness, and reconciliation with God.

Repentance in the Life of David

Before we consider the 7 steps of repentance, let’s look briefly at the life of David.

Alright!

When discussing genuine repentance, few examples in the Bible stand out as prominently as the story of King David. As a man after God’s own heart, David’s life is a testament to the transformative power of repentance and the grace of God.

David’s journey of repentance begins with a grave sin. While walking on his palace rooftop, David spotted Bathsheba bathing and became infatuated with her beauty. Despite knowing, she was married to Uriah the Hittite, one of his loyal soldiers, David pursued her, ultimately leading to adultery and the murder of Uriah.

God sent Nathan the prophet to confront David about his sin. Nathan told David a parable about a rich man who stole a poor man’s only lamb. David, unaware that the parable was about him, became enraged and demanded justice. Nathan then revealed to David that he was the rich man in the story and had sinned against God.

At that moment, David recognized the gravity of his sin and genuinely repented. You can see his remorse and how he asked for forgiveness by reading Psalm 51, where he poured out his heart to God.

Now let’s dive into the 7 steps of repentance according to the bible:

7 steps of repentance

1. Acknowledge Your Sin

The first step of repentance is to acknowledge your sin. This involves recognizing the wrongs you’ve committed and admitting your guilt. Sin pricks the conscience. For example, Adam and Eve’s eyes were open, and their conscience were disturbed when they disobeyed God.

David said in Psalms 51:3, “For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me.” Therefore, the first step in asking God for forgiveness is admitting your sin because you cannot turn from your sins if you have committed them while being unaware of them.

But at times, recognizing our all sins can be difficult, as we often become blind to our own faults and shortcoming. Psalms 19:12 says, “Who can understand his errors? Cleanse thou me from secret faults.” So, you must put into consideration unknown sins while you seek God’s forgiveness.

Here are the things you should do:

  • Reflect on your actions and thoughts
  • Be honest with yourself and God about your sins.
  • Avoid being defensive
  • Pray and ask God to reveal any hidden sins or areas where you need to repent
  • As you become aware of your sins, write them down if possible, to help you remember and process them.

2. Express Godly Sorrow

The next step is to express godly sorrow for your sins. Expression of Godly sorrow isn’t about just feeling bad about yourself or wallowing in guilt. Rather, it’s a deep and sincere sorrow for having offended God and others. The Apostle Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 7:10, “Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.”

So, you are to;

  • Reflect on the consequences of your sins on your relationship with God and others
  • Ask God to help you realize His holiness and how your sin has hurt Him more deeply.
  • Focus on the impact of your sin, not just the sin itself

3. Confess Your Sins to God and Ask for His Forgiveness

Once you’ve acknowledged your sin and experienced godly sorrow, you’ve to, now, confess your sins to God. In doing so, you’re acknowledging your need for His forgiveness and grace. In this step, you come before God with humility and honesty, admitting your sins and asking for forgiveness. Remember the comforting words of 1 John 1:9: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” By the reason of these comforting words from John, you are to appeal to God’s mercy.

David asks God to show him mercy in the first line of psalm 51, “According to your unfailing love, have mercy on me, O God.” This supplication for pardon has its origins in David’s perception of God’s attributes, especially His forgiving nature. David acknowledges that God has a covenant relationship with him that is marked by unwavering love. Based on the covenant relationship we have with God via Christ, believers also approach God in repentance and seek His forgiveness.

Therefore;

  • Pray and honestly confess your sins to God
  • Appeal to His mercy and ask him to forgive you
  • Thank Him for His forgiveness and mercy
  • Remember that God’s love for you is unconditional and not based on your performance

4. Turn Away From Sin

True repentance involves turning away from sin and making a conscious decision to change your ways. Jesus often told those He healed to “go and sin no more” (John 8:11). For you, turning away from your sins is more than just a temporary change; it’s about committing to a new way of life that reflects God’s will. This might involve breaking unhealthy habits, setting boundaries, or seeking accountability from trusted friends or mentors

Also, show sincere desire for transformation. Listen to David’s prayer, “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” (Psalm 51:10). It is God that truly changes a man. So ask him to make you into a new vessel as the scripture says in Jeremiah 18:6 “O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? Saith the LORD. Behold, as the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are ye in mine hand, O house of Israel.”

Therefore;

  • Make plans to avoid situations that lead to sin
  • Seek accountability from trusted friends or mentors
  • Replace sinful habits with godly ones, such as prayer, Bible study, and fellowship

5. Embrace God’s Love

Repentance is not only about turning away from sin, but it also involves turning toward God’s love which is unconditional, and God is always ready to welcome us back when we stray. Embracing God’s love means accepting His forgiveness and allowing His love to transform us.

  • Meditate on Scriptures that reveal God’s love, such as Romans 8:38-39 and 1 John 4:9-10
  • Trust in God’s love and let it heal your heart and restore your relationship with Him
  • Share your experience of God’s love with others.

6. Accept God’s Forgiveness

Accepting God’s forgiveness is one of the most crucial steps of the repentance process. Many people find this step challenging because they feel guilty or undeserving of forgiveness. However, according to the scripture, God’s forgiveness is ready and available to anyone who repents.

But, in Psalm 103:12, we read, “As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.” So, you are to believe by faith that God has forgiven you.

Here are actions to take;

  • Trust in God’s promises of forgiveness found in Scripture
  • Forgive yourself, knowing that God has forgiven you
  • Let go of guilt and shame, and embrace the freedom that comes from God’s forgiveness

7. Make Restitution and Seek Reconciliation

This is the last of the steps of repentance. You’ve to make restitution and seek reconciliation with those you’ve hurt. This involves taking responsibility for your actions, apologizing, and making amends where possible. Jesus emphasized the importance of reconciliation in Matthew 5:23-24, saying, “Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift.”

In addition to this, you should forgive everyone that has wronged you. This is so important as it affects God’s attitude towards us while we seek His forgiveness.

So you should;

  • Identify those you’ve hurt and seek their forgiveness
  • Identify those that have hurt you and forgive them irrespective of the degree and frequency of their wrongdoings to you.
  • Make amends where possible, such as repaying stolen items or fixing damaged relationships
  • Pray for the grace and humility to genuinely apologize and seek reconciliation

In conclusion, these 7 steps of repentance offer a pathway to healing and reconciliation with God. By acknowledging your sin, expressing godly sorrow, turning away from sin, confessing to God, embracing His love, accepting His forgiveness, and making restitution, you can experience the joy that comes with genuine repentance.

No matter how far you may have strayed, remember that you are never beyond repentance. God is always ready and willing to forgive and restore you. Embrace these steps of repentance and watch as God’s grace transforms your heart and renews your relationship with Him.

God’s grace!
